Introduction
We can add larger numbers quickly by breaking them into parts, then adding the parts to find the original sum.
Step by step | Addition by place value
- Break each addend into tens and ones.
- Add the tens. Remember this sum.
- Add the ones. Add this sum to the earlier sum to find the original sum.
Example | Addition by place value
Q: 34 + 58
A: First, we break the addends into groups of tens and ones:
34 = 30 + 4
58 = 50 + 8
Next, we add the tens and ones:
30 + 50 = 80
4 + 8 = 12
Finally, we add these sums to find the original sum:
80 + 12 = 92
Thus, 34 + 58 = 92.
